What it does, in order. The iron makes contact and everything blooms white. The white falls to orange, and the edges hold the heat longest — thin metal, concentrated heat. Smoke starts after the flash, not during it, because the smoke is the wood burning and it lags. Then it cools through ember to char, and what is left is a mark darker than the surface it sits on, which never quite goes away.
